Hello friends!

Here's a recent practice session from inside my studio. My niece Cassidy sat for me and some artist friends for a 3-hour pose. I didn't get the painting completed to my satisfaction in person, so I used some photo references to make some refinements over the next few days.

Here's another recent practice session with my friends, this time with a model named Talbott. And like the painting of my niece, he sat for three hours and I used some photo references to make some refinements afterwards.

Unlike the head studies painted inside, here's something painted outside. The location is at the edge of a small neighborhood park near the VCU campus here in Richmond, Virginia. The canvas panel is tiny, only measuring only 6x8". This preliminary study will be used as reference for a larger studio painting in the coming months.

Because I can paint small studies like these relatively quickly, this practice has been an invaluable way for me to paint in town, or when I travel. They serve as a quick "note taking" of my observations, usually painted in under 2 hours. I wrote about a European trip in 2019 when I did 30 studies like this over the course of 4 weeks. Back inside for this still-life, although this time in another artist's studio. A friend of mine set up the lovely arrangement and invited me to her place to paint. The canvas measures 11x14", and was painted back in June.
