New Painting

Hello friends!

Here's a new figurative piece, almost complete and tentatively titled Sunlight Sonata. It measures 24x30", and was painted from a combination of live sittings & photographic references. The setting is a nearby hill, on the grounds of the Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts. I chose light colored clothing for the model, knowing the sunlight would create dramatic contrasts on the shirt & pants.

The model is my friend Chapin. He's a gifted musician, and frequent model in my work, including the recent painting Day Dream.

For the first session, I photographed Chapin assuming various poses holding the guitar, as I positioned myself standing, seated, and flat on the ground to capture his movements from various viewpoints.

After analyzing the images, I chose my favorite pose and composition, and we returned a few days later so I could paint preliminary references.

I worked on the painting over the course of a month, using my studies painted from life as references, along with photos & videos on my monitor.

The piece is intended to go on the market Spring 2026.
