Painting In Croatia And Bosnia

Hello friends, hope you are doing well!
My husband and I are currently traveling in the Balkans. We started in
Sarajevo and Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina, followed by Split and Hvar
in Croatia. Our final stop is Dubrovnik, in fact I'm writing this on a
ferry en route.
Each of these locations are uniquely beautiful with great food and
lovely people. Dividing time between wanting to paint (of course) and
sightseeing like any other tourist is tough, but nothing to complain
about.

Painting from our apartment balcony in Sarajevo. Fantastic view, with
the late afternoon sun hitting the minarets of various mosques. I had
to work quick to get a small 6x8" preliminary study in acrylic before
the sun faded. When I get home, my study will serve as a reference for
a larger studio painting in oil.
Incidentally, as we were flying across the Atlantic, we realized we had
inadvertently booked an apartment in Sarajevo for the wrong dates! We
had to scramble to find an alternative, and thank goodness we did. The
spot could not have provided a better view, and I didn't even have to
lug my materials out in the crowded streets.

Painting a quick study in the seaside town of Hvar, Croatia a few days
ago. It started pretty sunny but turned cloudy, so I couldn't get as
far as I would like. Still, I retrieved enough of an impression to
serve as a preliminary for a larger oil painting back home.

The weather was a mixture of sunshine and clouds, and also really
windy. Ron (my spouse) stood at my easel and held it in place for 90
minutes so I could paint without it blowing over. He's always been
supportive of my work, but literally so in this case as he supported my
easel!

Hopefully I'll get to do some more sketching as we continue on,
visiting Dubrovnik next. If you're interested learning about the
plein-air equipment I use on the road, check out a two-part article I
wrote in 2019 while traveling through Germany and Italy. Part One
and Part Two.
All the best,
David
