Sunset At The Roman Forum was inspired by a trip to Athens in September 2024. Although this painting was done in my studio, I did numerous oil sketches on locations in Greece and countless photo references of painting subjects. We happened to be walking past the site of the Roman Forum in Athens late one day, and I was able to catch on film the dwindling, fading sunlight as it struck the tops of trees, columns and surrounding structures. Within seconds it was gone, and I was so glad I was there at the perfect time to capture such a fleeting effect. The experience was so striking it remained vivid in my memory once I returned home and began this painting in my studio.
In my studio, April 2025, with the paintings inspired by my recent trip to Greece
