What Is A Hand-Embellished Giclée?
A hand-embellished giclée on canvas is a high-quality art reproduction where the artist has personally added physical paint, texture, or details directly onto the printed canvas. It serves as a middle ground between a standard giclée print and an expensive original painting.
Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay"): From a process introduced in the 1990’s, a giclée is a museum-quality digital print made with archival pigment inks. Before giclée, art was often reproduced by offset lithography, a four-color process using photographic separation to create printing plates. It could produce thousands of prints, but often resulted in muted colors & visible dot patterns. The giclée process utilizes high-resolution digital photography (and in some cases direct scanning) of the surface of a painting, followed by pigmented inks sprayed directly onto a canvas or paper surface. Unlike offset lithography, the giclée process captures extreme detail & color accuracy that can last over 100 years.
Canvas: The giclée process provides a huge leap forward in printing onto many surfaces, including high-grade artist canvas, often stretched over a wooden frame to mimic the look of an original work.
Hand-Embellished: After printing, the artist uses brushes or palette knives to apply the same materials used when they created the original (such as oil or acrylic) to enhance the surface with textured passages of paint.
Why Choose It Over A Standard Giclée Print?
One-of-a-Kind: Because the brushstrokes are added by hand, no two embellished giclées are exactly the same.
Texture and Depth: It eliminates the "flat" look of a standard giclée print through the hand-application of passages of oil paint by the artist, adding physical ridges and highlights that catch the light.
Greater Value: These pieces are often released in smaller limited editions, signed & numbered by the artist, and typically hold more market value than standard unembellished prints.
Cost-Effective: It allows you to own a piece that looks & feels like an original for a fraction of the price of the actual original painting.
