Behind The Scenes: Fall '21/Winter '22

From a newsletter sent February 22, 2022:

“Portrait Of The Artist At The Easel will be part of my May 2022 exhibition of approximately 25 new paintings. It's the first large-scale self portrait I've painted, measuring 40x30". I worked on it over the course of three months..." Click here to read the entire article.

From a newsletter sent February 2, 2022:

In mid-May, I will have the first major exhibit of new work since 2018. I'm in the midst of creating several new paintings, with a projected twenty-five new pieces going on the market.

An Icepact & Chinese Takeout (#2) is one of the showcase paintings created for the show. For this piece, I worked with a dancer from the Richmond Ballet, who posed a few years ago in a painting with a similar theme and title. The concept has stuck with me, and I decided to revisit the motif. The canvas measures 30x24".

Let me know if this painting interests you. When it comes on the market, the right of refusal will be given in the order that I receive collector requests.

From a newsletter sent March 7, 2022:

"Morning In The Garden is one of the paintings created for my upcoming show. It was started from life in July 2021 in a friend's beautiful garden, and later completed in my studio..." Click here to read the entire article.

Lilacs & Golden Apples is another painting I'm putting aside for my show. It measures 20x16". The lovely lilacs were from an artist friend's garden, and I loved how their color complimented the gold in the apples. Click the image, or here, for more info.

From a newsletter sent December 30, 2021:

It's almost the end of the year. I'm probably not alone in doing a little looking back and a little looking forward. For this newsletter, in the latter category, here are two new paintings, part of my upcoming May exhibition. And looking back, here's an older painting now available as a museum-quality print.

El Vaquero Cubano

Oil, 22x28", 2021

El Vaquero Cubano will be one of the highlight paintings of the upcoming show. Vaquero is the Spanish word for "cowboy". I visited a tobacco farm in Cuba in 2017, and this painting was inspired by that visit. Click here to see the painting framed and some high-resolution images.

Back To The Books

Oil, 12x9" 2021

Here's another one I'm putting aside for the show. The piece was created as an online classroom demo. My Mom came up with the clever title. Check it out framed.

Rainy Evening In Manhattan

Oil, 22x28" 2020

Newly available as a print!

Rainy Evening In Manhattan was a very popular painting I introduced in early 2020. It sold almost immediately upon being announced. However, it's now available as a museum-quality print.

From a newsletter sent December 20, 2021:

As I've mentioned in recent newsletters, I'm preparing for a show of 20-something new paintings in May. Below is a detail from one of the paintings, A Day Full of Promise. It will be one of the highlight pieces of the exhibit. Click the image to see the entire painting, including how it looks framed.

Still Life With Bananas & Apple

Oil, 10x8" 2021

Here's another one I'm putting aside for the show. The piece was created as an online classroom demo. Here, in the age of Zoom teaching, my students watched on their screens at home while I painted this demonstration painting in my studio, June 2021. Check it out framed.

From a newsletter sent January 7, 2021:

Joe At The Window

Newly available as a print!

Joe At The Window featured a popular model from many of my paintings. The original is in a private collection. However, it's now available as a high quality print.

Click here to see a high resolution image or to order a print.

Study of Jamar

Newly available as a print!

When I painted Jamar in 2017, he was performing at Richmond Triangle Players. I asked some mutual theatre friends to make an intro on my behalf so I could paint him. What a great face! The original is in a private collection. However, it's now available as a high quality print.

The Accordion Player

Newly available as a print!

The model in The Accordion Player is a talented musician who travelled through Spain and developed an appreciation for the accordion-playing buskers. Upon her return, she discovered an accordion in her grandmother's attic, and taught herself how to play. The original is in a private collection. However, it's now available as a high quality print.

From The Vaults:

A few things from years past

The other day, I came across this photo of a painting in progress from August of 2015. It's neat for me to see an early stage, particularly now that painting exists in my memory as the finished product, of course.

Click here to see what it turned into, along with a description of my process in this early stage.

The Morning Wash

Oil, 30x20", 2011, private collection

Here's a painting of my niece and her little boy, painted in 2011. It was recently shared by BoldBrush on Facebook, where they provided a nice description:

"This sensitive portrayal of a mother and her son is imbued with fresh breezes and the scent of freshly washed laundry. It honors the age old tradition of drying the wash on the line".

From a newsletter sent November 16, 2021:

In May of next year, I'll have the first major exhibit of new work since 2018. I'm in the midst of creating several new paintings, with a projected twenty-five new pieces going on the market.

Strongman, Oil, 36x24", 2021

Strongman will be one of the highlight pieces of the show. A model I worked with last summer had an amazing handlebar mustache, right out of the turn-of-the-century. Along with his athletic physique, the model's vintage mustache-style inspired me to imagine an historical painting created around 1900.

Let me know if this painting interests you. When it comes on the market, the right of refusal will be given in the order that I receive collector requests.

The painting in process late last summer, along with a sketch painted from life (top) and a reference photo on my monitor.

The model sitting for a 14x11" head and shoulders study last summer, used as an additional reference for the Strongman painting.
